The Water Family
In a small village lived a wise farmer, Parvatbhai, and his wife Saritaben.
Everyone called them the "Water Family" because they valued water like gold.
Parvatbhai had built a 'Khet Talavdi' in his field and a large underground tank at home to store rainwater.
Their three daughters also loved saving water. Varsha was the eldest. She was a mechanic. She fixed any leaking tap she saw. Vaari, the second, often gave speeches in school and the Panchayat on water conservation. The youngest, Zarana, reminded everyone by singing,
After two years, the village faced a terrible drought. The river dried up, wells became empty, and people had no water even to drink. Raju sat sadly with an empty pot and admitted he had been foolish. The villagers realised their mistake and decided to approach Parvatbhai.
Ashamed, they went to his house. Raju said, "We wasted water. Please, help us." Kind-hearted Parvatbhai welcomed them and shared water from his underground tank, which still had plenty of stored rainwater.
Just then, the District Collector arrived to inspect the crisis. He noticed the dry village but also saw Parvatbhai's green farm. "This family is safe because they respected water," he told the villagers. Raju promised to change and asked for guidance. The Collector agreed to provide government support to build underground tanks for all, on one condition - they must promise to harvest rainwater.
The villagers worked hard with Parvatbhai's help. Soon, every house had a tank. The following year also brought less rain, but this time the village was prepared. Their tanks were full, and no one suffered.
At last, everyone understood Zarana's song: Truly, water is life.

📖 વાર્તાનું ગુજરાતી ભાષાંતર
એક નાનકડા ગામમાં એક બુદ્ધિમાન ખેડૂત પર્વતભાઈ અને તેમના પત્ની સરિતાબેન રહેતા હતા. દરેક વ્યક્તિ તેમને "વોટર ફેમિલી" (પાણીનો પરિવાર) કહીને બોલાવતા હતા કારણ કે તેઓ પાણીને સોનાની જેમ કિંમતી ગણતા હતા. પર્વતભાઈએ તેમના ખેતરમાં 'ખેત તલાવડી' અને વરસાદી પાણીનો સંગ્રહ કરવા માટે ઘરમાં એક મોટી ભૂગર્ભ ટાંકી બનાવી હતી.
તેમની ત્રણેય દીકરીઓને પણ પાણી બચાવવું ખૂબ ગમતું હતું. વર્ષા સૌથી મોટી હતી. તે એક મિકેનિક હતી. તે જ્યાં પણ ટપકતો નળ જોતી તેને તરત જ રિપેર કરી દેતી. બીજા નંબરની દીકરી વારી, અવારનવાર શાળામાં અને પંચાયતમાં પાણીના સંરક્ષણ પર ભાષણ આપતી હતી. સૌથી નાની ઝરણા, ગીત ગાઈને બધાને યાદ અપાવતી:
"પાણી એ જરૂરિયાત છે!
પાણી જ જીવન છે!
પાણી એ આત્મા છે.
તેને બચાવવું એ જ આપણું લક્ષ્ય છે."

પરંતુ ગામના અન્ય લોકો બેદરકાર હતા. એક સવારે, તેમનો પાડોશી રાજુ પાઇપ વડે પોતાની બાઇક ધોઈ રહ્યો હતો. પાણી બધે જ વહી રહ્યું હતું. સરિતાબેને તેને નમ્રતાપૂર્વક પાઇપને બદલે ડોલનો ઉપયોગ કરવાની સલાહ આપી. પણ રાજુ હસ્યો અને બોલ્યો, "અમારી પાસે પુષ્કળ પાણી છે! નદી અને કુવાઓ તો જુઓ!" નાની ઝરણાએ પણ જ્યારે તેને ચેતવણી આપી, ત્યારે તેણે તેને અવગણી દીધી. ગામના ઘણા લોકો આવું જ વર્તન કરતા હતા.
બે વર્ષ પછી, ગામમાં ભયંકર દુષ્કાળ પડ્યો. નદી સુકાઈ ગઈ, કુવા ખાલી થઈ ગયા અને લોકોને પીવા માટે પણ પાણી ન રહ્યું. રાજુ ખાલી ઘડો લઈને ઉદાસ થઈને બેઠો હતો અને સ્વીકાર્યું કે તે મૂર્ખ હતો. ગામલોકોને પોતાની ભૂલ સમજાઈ અને તેઓએ પર્વતભાઈ પાસે જવાનું નક્કી કર્યું.
શરમાતા શરમાતા તેઓ તેમના ઘરે ગયા. રાજુએ કહ્યું, "અમે પાણીનો બગાડ કર્યો. મહેરબાની કરીને અમને મદદ કરો." દયાળુ પર્વતભાઈએ તેમનું સ્વાગત કર્યું અને તેમની ભૂગર્ભ ટાંકીમાંથી પાણી આપ્યું, જેમાં હજુ પણ પુષ્કળ પ્રમાણમાં સંગ્રહિત વરસાદી પાણી હતું.
બરાબર એ જ સમયે જિલ્લા કલેક્ટર આ કટોકટીની તપાસ કરવા માટે ત્યાં આવ્યા. તેમણે સૂકું ભઠ્ઠ ગામ જોયું પણ સાથે પર્વતભાઈનું લીલુંછમ ખેતર પણ જોયું. તેમણે ગામલોકોને કહ્યું, "આ પરિવાર સુરક્ષિત છે કારણ કે તેઓએ પાણીનો આદર કર્યો છે." રાજુએ બદલાવવાનું વચન આપ્યું અને માર્ગદર્શન માંગ્યું. કલેક્ટરે એક શરતે બધા માટે ભૂગર્ભ ટાંકી બનાવવા માટે સરકારી સહાય આપવાનું સ્વીકાર્યું - તેઓએ વરસાદી પાણીનો સંગ્રહ (Rainwater harvesting) કરવાનું વચન આપવું પડશે.
ગામલોકોએ પર્વતભાઈની મદદથી સખત મહેનત કરી. ટૂંક સમયમાં જ દરેક ઘરમાં ટાંકી બની ગઈ. બીજા વર્ષે પણ ઓછો વરસાદ પડ્યો, પરંતુ આ વખતે ગામ તૈયાર હતું. તેમની ટાંકીઓ ભરેલી હતી અને કોઈને તકલીફ ન પડી.
છેવટે, બધાને ઝરણાનું ગીત સમજાઈ ગયું: ખરેખર, પાણી જ જીવન છે.
